Setting up a Telegram signal copier sounds intimidating until you've done it once — then it's a ten-minute job. This guide takes you from a fresh install to your first automatically copied trade, and explains the settings that decide how each signal is sized and managed. We'll use CopyPips as the reference setup.
The two pieces that make it work
Every Telegram-to-MetaTrader copier has two halves. The first is a desktop app that logs into your Telegram account and reads the channels you choose. The second is an Expert Advisor (EA) — a small program that runs inside MT4 or MT5 and places the trades. The two talk to each other on your own machine, which is what keeps your broker credentials off anyone else's servers.
Step-by-step install
- 1Install the CopyPips appDownload and install it on your device, then sign in with your Telegram account. The app needs to be a member of the channels you want to copy — nothing else.
- 2Attach the EA in MetaTraderCopy the EA file into your terminal's Experts folder, restart MT4/MT5, and drag the EA onto any chart. Allow automated trading when prompted.
- 3Confirm the bridge is liveWith both running, the app and EA connect over a local file bridge. You'll see the link confirmed — that's your signal pipeline open.
- 4Place a test signalPost a simple test trade in a channel you control (or wait for a live one) and watch it appear on your terminal. Once you've seen one round-trip, you're set.
Connecting your Telegram channels
You tell the copier which channels to watch by adding their IDs — comma-separated if you follow several. There's no limit on how many you connect, and each channel can carry its own risk profile, so an aggressive scalping channel and a conservative swing channel don't have to share the same lot size.
Symbol mapping (the step people skip)
Signal providers and brokers rarely agree on symbol names. A provider posts GOLD; your broker lists it as XAUUSD. ECN brokers often add a prefix or suffix like .m or oct.. Map these once in the EA and every future signal for that instrument routes to the right symbol automatically. Skipping this is the number-one reason a freshly installed copier "does nothing" on certain trades.
Risk modes explained
How each trade is sized is the most consequential setting you'll touch. There are three modes:
- Fixed lot — always trade the same lot size, regardless of the signal.
- Dynamic dollar — risk a fixed cash amount per trade; the copier does the lot math from your stop distance.
- Dynamic percent — risk a set percentage of your account balance, so position size scales with your equity.
You can apply a mode globally or split risk across take-profit levels, and set each level independently when a signal carries more than one target.
Advanced controls worth enabling
Breakeven & trailing
Move your stop to breakeven automatically once a trade reaches a set number of pips, a dollar figure, a risk-to-reward ratio, or the first take-profit. A pip-based trailing stop can then follow price the rest of the way, locking in gains without you watching the chart.
SL/TP override & multiple targets
Override the provider's stop or target with your own — always, or only when they're missing — and run up to five take-profit levels per signal, each with its own size.
Time filter
Restrict copying to specific hours to dodge thin liquidity, the rollover spread, or high-impact news windows.
Do you need a VPS?
No — a VPS is never required. CopyPips works on every device, so as long as the app and MetaTrader are on, signals are copied. A VPS only matters if you want trades executed 24/7 without leaving your own device running.
Once you're comfortable, your license and downloads live in the customer portal, and you can review plans and pricing whenever you're ready to scale to more accounts.
